How to Spiritually Clean Your House:
Twelve Simple Steps to
Protect Your Personal Space

By Graciaella Carri

Just like those dusty shelves need cleaning so does your personal space.  You can scrub, vacuum, fumigate a space, even use a plug in deodorizer but it still can maintain a certain dark vibe or feeling to it.  When you walk down a city or even suburban street you will often get a feeling. Sometimes the feeling is safe, warm and comfortable.  Other times it’s restless, sinister or just plain creepy.  There’s a good chance that something unsavory went down in that spot.

Some of us are very sensitive to the spiritual world and pick up upon those recorded emotions and scenes, while others just get a disturbing feeling.  There are many ways to spiritually cleanse your home, office or work space.  Why would you cleanse your personal spaces?  Well, spiritual debris and recorded energies have their ways of accumulating in spaces.  Often if there has been dramatic activity or extreme emotions experienced within a space, there will be debris.  In my experience spirits are drawn to or attached to such spaces.

Let’s face it, not every human being is psychologically sound or happy.  Many people carry dysfunctional baggage with them throughout their lives.  Some people continue to gather such baggage life time after lifetime without ever hitting a moment of clarity.  Eventually, this luggage will get the better of them and they sink into despair.  When people who are emotionally stuck in life pass on, there’s usually no epiphany, just a continuation of replaying the same old, same old!  Such spirits are people who did not do their therapy or resolve their emotional conflicts and once they pass away they continue to wrestle with their demons in a type of purgatory between the realms. These people usually become what we think of as ghosts, but many do not physically manifest as they do emotionally linger with their essence around their familiar places.

We all have safe or familiar places that we attach ourselves to in life.  For some of us it’s a favorite chair, room of a house or geographical location that brings us joy.  For others we find that the bulk of our lives bring us to one place where we expound the most energy and often emotions and thoughts.  The same can be said about spirits.  Spirits, especially disgruntled ones, hang around the places that they were most attached to, or that were the most significant for them while they were alive.  If you think about people who suffer from agoraphobia they fear leaving their homes or room.  In many ways disgruntled spirits are either so obsessed by certain thoughts or just plain fearful of moving on, that they get stuck.  Naturally their fixated, emotions keep certain spirits bound to specific places.

There are wandering spirits who are drawn to the light of certain people that they are attracted to for one reason or another.  Some spirits are friendly, like guardian angels that can be helpful. Unfortunately other spirits are just lost souls unable or unwilling to move on.  This is why we need to cleanse ourselves and our spaces spiritually.  This exercise can be a beautiful embellishment to whatever your belief system is.  In all religions there are good people and many who are truly spiritual and tuned into the greatest good and to pure love and intention.  In your own belief it is designed to tune you into closer touch with your higher power as you see it.  Remember always to say thank you after completing such an exercise.  Always start each day with gratitude and count your blessings for all the good that you have in your life as your blessings are what give your life meaning.

Twelve Simple Steps to Protect Your Personal Space:

Step One: Buy a smudge stick or sage.  Smudge sticks and sage can be ordered at Candletherapy.com .   Sage and smudge sticks are very much a Native American tradition where spiritual cleansing is concerned.

Step Two: Buy Sea Salt or Kosher salt.  Salt is the universal cleanser.  Salt belongs to the sea where all life has come from, but water is the universal solvent as salt also purifies and preserves.

Step Three: Buy pure white flowers (white roses, mums any flower as close to pure white) and four small, clear vases, drinking glasses can be used.  White flowers represent purity.

Step Four: Buy a compass, or global tracking device so that you can find true north, south, east and west.

Step Five: Buy some really good incense (also available at Candletherapy.com) like rose, jasmine, blueberry or lavender or house blessing incense.  You want to bring in certain energies that define who you are into your personal space.

Step Six: Buy a white candles (votives are fine) light one candle and envision a protective robe of white light in your mind’s eye and put it on.  Meditate that this robe of white light creates a globe of protective white light around you and that in this light no evil can ever harm you.  Pray to God, Goddess or your higher power to guide, love and protect you.  I respect everyone’s religion, so by all means use the divine authority that you are spiritually dedicated to.  In all religions there are spiritual and benevolent followers, your aspiration here is to attune with this all, loving and pure force of your religion.

Step Seven: Take a bath in sea salt, about 3 cups.  If you do not have a tub mix a pitcher of sea salt and warm water then douse yourself from head to toe.  This will keep your physical and ethereal body out of harms way.  Envision your protective circle of white light surrounding you.

Step Eight: You will now form a banishing circle.  This is a form of spiritual cleansing as in ridding or removing unwanted energies.  For individual rooms, or studio apartments this exercise is easy. For large houses, begin at the eastern point and then move through the entire space making your counter-clockwise and clockwise circles throughout the home from east to east.

Mix some sea salt (about a tablespoon) in a small bowl of water and walk to the east.  As you banish negativity say a prayer asking your higher power to help you send away and clean your space spiritually so that you will always be safe, happy and comfortable there.  Wish all departed spirits well and continue making a complete counter-clockwise circle starting at the east towards the north, then towards the west and then towards the south.  You eventually finish up by moving from the south back to the east where you began.

Step Nine:  Now light the smudge stick or sage and burn it in an ashtray or a safe incense burner and walk to the east again.  Continue your prayer and the counter-clockwise circle moving towards the north, west, south, back to the east where you started.  Congratulations you have just officially banished negativity from your space.  You have also left a void and you now want to fill this vacuum with love, money, joy, health, happiness and all kinds of great abundance.

Step Ten: Walk to the east and light your special incense.  Prayer asking God, Goddess or your higher power to love, protect and guide you and to fill your space with health, happiness, love, peace and serenity and unlimited abundance, moving south, west, north and completing your circle in the east.   Envision yourself happy, healthy, creative and filled with joy and unlimited optimism.

Step Eleven: Trim and place your white flowers in four solid clusters add one teaspoon of sugar to the water and a small half cap of bleach which will keep the water from turning murky and has a way of preserving the flowers longevity.  Place each flower vase in each spiritual direction of your home or room, one in the east, south, west and north, so that each direction or corner has flowers in it.

Step Twelve: Light your white candle and say a prayer and meditate upon the happiness and creativity that you will have in your space.  Ask God, Goddess or higher power as you see it to love, protect, guide and enlighten you.  Congratulations you have not only banished all negativity from your space, but you have also created your own energy inside your space and marked it sacred as your own.  This process can be repeated seasonally, or whenever you feel the need to reclaim your personal space.  It should be done when you want to rid your space from the emotional-psychic build up of energies that you and those you live with may have created.  Remember, every person on this planet is working through their karma and is bound to accumulate emotional-psychic debris in their living and working space.  If you work in an office or space where it is impossible to do such a banishing then you can visualize the process and you can always surround yourself in a bubble of light where-ever and whenever you’d like.

While spiritual cleansing will not send a funky spirit into white light and spiritual enlightenment, it will signify that you are the new owner of the earthly domain that you reside in, or work in.   Spiritual cleansing will keep all unwanted and unsavory energies away from you and act like a spiritual, electronic fence around you and your property.  Such cleansing will also spiritually resonate with living people who may come to your space that are not in your best interest.  This protection will make any ill wishing, negative, controlling or evil people feel restless and unwelcome with good reason.  It will also conjure up your ancestral protective spirits and your guardian angels that will signify for you on the ethereal level and keep all unwanted people and energies away. This is a very good idea when you move into a new home or apartment.  Just as you decorate your space to reflect your own personality you can spiritually reinvent your space to suit your mood and to be at ease in.  Your personal space is the most important, life affirming blessing that you must give yourself in order to thrive in an aura of serenity.

Brightest Blessings,
